Yesterday’s two screenings in San Jose of Vietnam War: Untold Stories from the South — Trials, Triumphs & Tragedies were both almost filled to capacity, making them among the most emotional and meaningful experiences of this journey.
What moved me most was the large presence of Vietnamese women in the audience. Mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, widows, and refugees filled the auditorium — many carrying memories and wounds that have remained unspoken for decades.
Too often, when people talk about the Vietnam War, the focus is on politics, military strategy, men and battles. But yesterday reminded me once again that behind every chapter of war stood Vietnamese women who carried extraordinary burdens, devotion and sacrifices.
Many lost husbands, fiances, fathers, brothers, and sons. Many endured poverty, persecution, reeducation camp separations, forced economic zones, dangerous escapes by sea, and the painful task of rebuilding families from nothing in a foreign land. Some sacrificed their youth, beauty, education, and dreams so their children could have a future.
As the film played, I saw many moistened eyes. Some quietly shared stories afterward — stories of survival, heartbreak, courage, and resilience.
Their strength is one of the greatest untold stories of the Vietnam War and its aftermath.
The Vietnamese community in San Jose — or as many lovingly call it, “Yellow Flower Valley” — gave us an unforgettable welcome filled with warmth, reflection, and heartfelt conversation across generations. It was especially inspiring to see younger Vietnamese Americans attending alongside their parents and grandparents, listening and learning about sacrifices that shaped their lives today.
This documentary is not only about war. It is about memory, resilience, truth, and the enduring human spirit. And yesterday in San Jose, Vietnamese women reminded all of us what courage truly looks like.
To all the women who endured so much during and after the war: thank you and please forgive me. The next film will be YOUR stories.

Làm Sao Chúng Ta Có Thể Quên Những Người Phụ Nữ?
Hai suất chiếu hôm qua tại San Jose của bộ phim Vietnam War: Untold Stories from the South — Trials, Triumphs & Tragedies trở thành một trong những trải nghiệm đầy ý nghĩa trong hành trình ra mắt phim của chúng tôi.
Điều làm tôi xúc động nhất là sự hiện diện đông đảo của phụ nữ Việt Nam trong thính đuòng. Những người mẹ, người vợ, người con, người chị, người góa phụ, — những người mang theo bao nhiêu ký ức và vết thương chưa từng được nhắc đến suốt nhiều thập niên qua.
Khi nhắc đến chiến tranh Việt Nam, chúng ta thường nói về chính trị, chiến lược quân sự, nam nhi chi chí hay những trận đánh lịch sử. Nhưng buổi chiếu hôm qua một lần nữa nhắc tôi rằng phía sau mỗi chương bi dũng của chiến tranh là sự hy sinh thầm lặng nhưng vô cùng lớn lao của người phụ nữ Việt Nam.
Nhiều người đã mất chồng, cha, ngưòi yêu, anh em và con cái. Nhiều người phải chịu cảnh nghèo đói, đàn áp, chia ly vì trại cải tạo, vùng kinh tế mới, vượt biển đầy hiểm nguy, và gầy dựng lại cuộc đời từ hai bàn tay trắng nơi xứ người. Có người hy sinh cả tuổi trẻ, nhan sắc, học hành và ước mơ để chồng, con cháu mình có một tương lai tốt đẹp hơn.
Trong lúc phim được trình chiếu, tôi thấy nhiều đôi mắt ướt lệ. Sau buổi chiếu, có những người lặng lẽ chia sẻ câu chuyện đời mình — những câu chuyện của mất mát, đau thương, nhưng cũng đầy nghị lực và lòng can đảm. Chính họ là một trong những câu chuyện lớn chưa được kể đầy đủ về chiến tranh Việt Nam và hậu quả kéo dài sau năm 1975.
Cộng đồng người Việt tại San Jose — hay như nhiều người trìu mến gọi là “Thung Lũng Hoa Vàng” — đã dành cho chúng tôi một sự đón tiếp đầy ấm áp và chân tình. Điều đặc biệt cảm động là sự hiện diện của thế hệ trẻ người Mỹ gốc Việt ngồi bên cạnh cha mẹ và ông bà để lắng nghe và tìm hiểu về những hy sinh đã tạo nên cuộc sống hôm nay của họ.
Bộ phim này không chỉ nói về chiến tranh. Nó nói về ký ức, sự kiên cường, sự thật, và sức mạnh bất khuất của con người. Và hôm qua tại San Jose, những người phụ nữ Việt Nam đã nhắc tất cả chúng ta rằng lòng can đảm thật sự trông như thế nào.
Xin tri ân và xin lỗi tất cả những người phụ nữ Việt đã hy sinh quá nhiều trong và sau chiến tranh. Bộ phim sau sẽ là câu chuyện của quý vị.
